Garden Visit

Mrs. Mumford's class and our class visited the RES/CHMS garden on Friday.  We observed and tasted the vegetables that were still in the garden.  We also spent time making detailed sketches of one or two vegetables.  It was amazing what we saw when we looked closely at each vegetable.  What a beautiful autumn afternoon to work on our scientific drawings.

Stone Soup Activity

This morning we brought the rest of our vegetables to the cafeteria for our Stone Soup.
Ms. Chapman-Renaud and Ms. Redmond from the Farm to School Program talked with us about many of the vegetables.  We learned where they grew and which parts we could eat (roots, leaves, stems, etc.)  They even helped us sort vegetables.  We tasted a few of the raw vegetables and herbs. We are so excited to try the Stone Soup tomorrow.

Audubon Field Trip- Autumn Inquiry

Kindergarten scholars went to the Audubon today, Wednesday, Oct. 1, to observe how plants and animals get ready for winter.  The Audubon guide helped children discover signs of fall in the fields and woods  Students pretended to be monarch butterflies migrating to Mexico and squirrels burying acorns for food during the winter.  This field trip touches upon three of our kindergarten science units; organisms, weather, and five senses.  It is more meaningful to kindergarten students when they are able to engage in hands-on learning like this.  The weather was cool and overcast.  Just the type of weather we would expect in Vermont in October.  Thank you to the parent chaperones who volunteered on this trip and helped students be observant scientists.
If you would like to walk the Audubon trails on your own they are free and open to the public.  The Audubon is a wonderful place to visit anytime of the year.

Kindergarten Scientists

Kindergarten scientists spent an hour outside on Friday observing and sketching nature.  They began by sketching a crab apple tree.  Students will be sketching the tree throughout the year making note of the changes that take place.  Then students observed a small plot of land.  They sketched many of the things they saw including insects, grass, clover, sticks and leaves.  The information will be used for a special project we are working on this fall.  We will sort the things we observed into plants and animals as well as living and nonliving.  Then we will share our discoveries on line and compare what we found to what other students have found in different parts of the country.
