Math Story Problems

This week in math, kindergarteners have been learning how to solve addition and subtraction story problems! We have been practicing the routine of picturing stories in our mind, retelling the story in our own words, acting it out, and even drawing what is happening in the story. Students are not told whether the problems are addition or subtraction and therefore have to think very carefully about the actions in the story and then use that information to choose a strategy to solve the problem. Check out the pictures below to see kindergarteners solving story problems!

Force and Motion

Our student teacher, Katherine Lafont, spent the week teaching a science unit on Force and Motion.
Students engaged in many activities that explored pushing and pulling.
Their focus questions for the unit included:
What are the different ways we can make objects move?
How can we change the way an object is moving?
How are forces related to energy?
How can someone predict how an object moves or changes in motion?

They loved this hands-on unit!  A big thank you to the Perrys and Vietjes for making our launch boards.  They worked wonderfully.

Artist in Residence Coming Soon

RES students will be working with Miriam Block, a textile artist and designer, during art classes. They will learn about the way textile designers use texture, color, and pattern to plan and create woven fabrics. This three-week residency will be an amazing opportunity for students in pre-k - 4 grades to discover the many ways fabric is used in our lives. This residency will run the weeks of 3/11, 3/18, 3/25.  During this residency, students will have an opportunity to design and weave fabric for a specific end use. We are seeking volunteers, so please come and join us in the art room!
