Kindergarten students are busy at work making arrangements of tiles. They need to follow rules to arrange their tiles. They have to use a certain number of tiles. The tiles need to lay flat and touch on a full side. Students will continue working on these arrangements after the break. They will explore the groups within each arrangement and use the groupings to write addition equations.

Stone Soup
"Stone Soup is what you need when you have some friends to feed." We made stone soup today. Kindergarten students peeled and cut up vegetables. We put all of our vegetables in a big pot and cooked it all day. It smelled amazing! Tomorrow we will get a chance to taste our soup. It is sure to be delicious. This project was based on the book, Some Friends to Feed: The Story of Stone Soup, by Pete Seeger. It is a retelling of a folk tale.

Wednesday Outdoor Time
What a wonderful morning we had on Wednesday! Kindergarten Scientists hiked through the woods, made snow volcanoes, and drew in the snow with markers and sticks. We saw evidence of animals in the woods. These observant students noticed many animal tracks and spider webs with snow glistening on them. Amazing!

Harvesting Potatoes
Kindergarten children were impressive potato harvesters this morning. Their digging skills can not be matched. They picked hundreds of potatoes. The children were amazed at the different sizes and shapes of the potatoes. Thank you to all our volunteers for chaperoning our first field trip. Thank you, Farmer Charlie, for giving us the opportunity to pick vegetables that will be donated to hungry Vermonters. (Barber Farm is a non-profit farm in Jericho that gives their organic produce to Vermonters in need.)

In the Woods
Our class loves the time we spend in the woods! We explored the woods and made discoveries about the different trees, leaves, bark, and pine cones. We created unique structures and designs with sticks we found in the woods. Some students chose to work alone and some worked in small cooperative groups. All students shared their creations. Many of the children were building homes for insects and other forest critters.

Outdoor Exploration and Learning
What a great time we had outside in the fields and woods today! We discovered so many things. Kindergarten scientists looked closely on the ground, in the grass, and on the flowers. They found snails, slugs, grasshoppers, worms, beetles, and caterpillars. One of our students pointed out jewelweed and showed everyone how to pop long pods on the plant. There was even a discussion about some holes we found. One idea was that the holes were made by people searching for dinosaur bones. I'm sure that we will continue to look for clues as to what made those holes.
