Read Across America Day
Wednesday, March 2 was NEA’s Read Across America Day 2016, the 19th annual celebration of reading that honors the March 2nd birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss. This celebration was created to encourage children to read and to build a nation of readers.
Due to school cancellation yesterday our class participated in the celebration of reading today. Of course, the number one way we participated was to read. Students read Dr. Seuss and other books. We had several read alouds as well. We colored and wore Dr. Seuss hats for the day. A couple of our reading activities involved labeling the Cat in the Hat parts and filling in the rhyming words in a Green Eggs and Ham chart. At math time we used a 100 number chart and created a picture of the Cat in the Hat by identifying and coloring numbers certain colors. Each student in our class received a book as a gift to celebrate Read Across America Day.
These activities were a great way to emphasize the importance of reading and make our first day back from vacation special!

Valentine's Day
Thank you families for making our classroom Valentine's Day celebration so special on Friday. The food was delicious. Students loved decorating their cookies! I was surprised by the amount of fruit they all ate. The children were so excited to give each other Valentines. It is great to have a day that celebrates friendship and caring. What a wonderful way to strengthen community.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Farm to School
Today Mae Quilty, the Farm to School Coordinator, came into our classroom to teach us about cabbage. First, she read us a book, How Did That Get In My Lunchbox?, the story of food. Our class learned a lot about where food comes from. Then we sorted pictures of food and decided if the food items came from chickens, cows or potatoes. Mae brought in some cabbages and we used our senses to observe and learn about the cabbages. We drew pictures of our favorite or most interesting cabbage. Mae is going to hang our pictures up in the cafeteria. Next week the whole school will taste test a cabbage recipe. Cabbage is the food of the month. Thank you Mae.
