Kindergarten Math

Kindergarten students enjoyed using cubes to measure different parts of their bodies.  They worked carefully to count accurately and record their work.

Kinderbuddies 2012-2013

Each week, we gather with our Fourth grade buddies to work on reading and writing, but, more importantly, to build a relationship centered on establishing RES as a kind and caring community of learners.  Tonight, at the RES school board meeting, Mr. Berry is planning to share our year-long collaboration with the members of the RES School Board as an example of the community at Richmond Elementary School.
Ms. Darby and I are so proud of the work our scholars share each week and the relationships that have been fostered by this collaboration.

Kindergarten Authors' Share

Kindergarten students were excited to share their writing and reading with their families and other guests on Wednesday morning.  They read books that they wrote and illustrated themselves as well as books by other authors.  The children were proud of their efforts and thrilled to share their work with such an appreciative audience.  We want to thank all of our guests for coming in and listening to our books.

Slopeside Syrup Visit

On Friday, March 8, Doug Brown from Slopeside Syrup visited our class.  He showed us pictures of his sugar house, tubing, and maple syrup.  Mr. Brown brought in some of his equipment and explained how he uses it.  We all went outside and learned how to identify a maple tree by the leaves and branches.  We particularly enjoyed helping to tap four trees in the woods behind our school.  Our class will be collecting sap and Mr. Brown will boil it down into maple syrup for us.
Thank you Mr. Brown for a great visit.  We learned so much!
This visit was arranged through the Farm to School program.  We would also like to thank Amy Gifford for setting up the visit.  What a wonderful opportunity for our students!

Chinese New Year

On Thursday, February 7 our class learned about the Chinese New Year.  Our fourth grade buddies joined us for activities.  We read a book and then made dragon puppets, red envelopes for good luck in the New Year, and fortune cookies.  Our classes used the new RES mobile cooking cart that was funded through a grant.  We were also fortunate to have Natsuko Ota, a kindergarten teacher from Japan and Canada, join us.  She is friends with Ms. Darby.  Natsuko Ota taught students how to do origami (paper folding).

Fourth Grade Buddies

Fourth grade buddies and kinderbuddies created and played math board games.  They worked together to come up with a game they both could enjoy.  They all did a great job cooperating and compromising!
